In theaters this December...
We Bought an Opium Den is a 2015 drama film loosely based on the 2011 American family comedy-drama “We Bought a Zoo,” loosely based on the 2008 memoir of the same name.
The film was written and directed by Laura Simis and stars Matt Damon as Benjamin Mee who, driven to desperation after a failed attempt to reopen an abandoned zoo, invests the rest of his family’s savings in an underground opium den.
Joined by his two children, Dylan (played by my neighbor Craig) and Rosie (played by Craig in a wig,) as well as his former head zoo keeper, Kelly Foster (played by Scarlett Johannson’s less attractive cousin, Karen), Benjamin relocates to an abandoned basement-level office space in San Francisco.
A delightful cast of transients frequent the opium den as the Mee’s struggle to restore it: Tyvan the Addict, Rick the Other Addict, and Dave the Hardened Criminal. In his most dynamic role since Spy Kids, Daryl Sabara appears as Ryan Burbank, an undercover narcotics detective posing as a cross-dressing lady of the night. The family comes together to smoke recreationally and revitalize the opium den in this heartwarming, feel-good (like, really, really good) movie.
